Session Description:

Query Letters: They’re not the boss of you!

In this workshop, participants shall transform their inner dialogue. Query letters will no longer be feared but viewed as a useful tool that not only attracts agents but strengthens a manuscript in progress.

In addition, attendees will learn a simple framework that enables them to write strong query bones. They’ll know how to add the right amount of details, style, and voice that produces a sparkling query letter. Everyone will leave with tips, do’s and don’ts, and resources to make their query stand out in the slush pile—for all the right reasons. And for those just beginning a manuscript, they’ll learn to make a preliminary query letter as indispensable as an outline or a character sheet.

Presenter: JoAnne Pope

JoAnne learned the value of a query letter when her first attempt was harshly critiqued. Not only was the query atrocious, but it revealed that her young adult novel had no stakes.

It kicked off near-obsessive research into query letters; the necessary elements, the fine details, what makes a query pop, and what makes an agent shudder. After fixing the story, and with a fresh query in hand, she was thrilled to sign with an agent several months later.

Until the agent moved to the publishing side of the business.

After regrouping, JoAnne wrote a query letter for her next novel while still in the planning phase, and found it a great help. She used the same query when shopping for a new agent. After many requests, and ultimately two offers, she signed with Melissa Edwards at Stonesong Literary.

When she isn’t writing queer YA, JoAnne spends her days working in adult education, helping marginalized adults involved in the criminal justice system.

JoAnne is a diehard geek and lives in Tucson with her gender fluid child. She’s active in SCBWI and co-hosts Tucson’s Kid Lit Mingle.
